As an alternative to the Opie GUI, you can also use PicoGUI, which, once you install, you can start from the command line with:

# pgserver
   

PicoGUI was designed to be faster and more portable than Opie but, at the moment, it has fewer apps.

In addition to PicoGUI, you can also get an X-based GUI.
